Giving the Sense: A Zoom Workshop in Analytical Reading
Facilitated by Candice M. Coleman, PhD
Are you a newly elected – or even a seasoned – Christian Science Reader, who would love to discover and share more meaning from the platform?
As you read silently to yourself, do you long for fresh insights?
Can you only hope that your reading expresses the power of the Word?
If you answered “yes” or even “maybe” to any of these questions, this workshop is for you!
I’d love to help you unlock the rich treasures in what you’re reading.
With Analytical Reading you see past the words to understanding the ideas.
Analytical Reading is based on Nedra Newkirk Lamar’s discovery of the conversational principles and patterns we use in everyday speech. Her work with broadcasters, actors, public readers and lecturers enabled them to bring out the writer’s meaning clearly and naturally. It has also been the subject of scholarly research including master’s theses in Bible Studies and Speech Communication.
Lamar was a Christian Scientist with degrees in Latin and Greek and a love of language. This workshop is based on her work and writings since the mid-20th century. It is still applicable and valuable for today’s spiritual seeker.
Please join me for this transformative Workshop — offered this Fall on Zoom.

I invite you to join a group of like-minded individuals. Please share this information with your church and Christian Science friends.
I look forward to seeing you this fall.

We, including myself, might assume we know what a writer means and so we read their words in a particular way. It’s so important however to slow down and really think about what they’re trying to convey. This allows for the true meaning to come forward in an inspired way, and in a manner that doesn’t make the listener work to understand.
Each session is 2 ½ hours long (over 12 hours of instruction) and facilitated personally by me.
Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for more individualized attention.
What You’ll Receive
Whether you’re reading our Pastor in a church service, as part of a metaphysical meeting, or silently for your own inspiration and study, this workshop can help you read with greater expression, understanding, and confidence. You’ll:
Learn practical tools and techniques, logical principles, and conversational patterns to improve your reading skills. Based on the work of Nedra Newkirk Lamar, it’s the same teaching I’ve shared with literally thousands of readers, lecturers, and church members (as well as actors, broadcasters and businesspeople) in both the U.S. and internationally for over 40 years.
Discover how to apply these techniques to bring out the writer’s meaning in a conversational way and avoid personal misinterpretation.
Be actively engaged in your own learning as an active participant with the material.
Be taught using a proven question-and-answer method. Once you understand the principles and patterns, YOU decide how you want to read a sentence, passage or verse.
Receive exclusive access to video replays of each session.
Download FREE handouts and bonus materials to support your learning.
Have the option of attending regularly scheduled online Drop-In Hours if questions come up between sessions.
Receive a FREE copy of the workshop textbook: Giving the Sense: How to Read Aloud with Meaning by Nedra Newkirk Lamar and the Institute of Analytical Reading to help you prepare and review.
Learn a lot, have fun and LAUGH!
Based on a wealth of experience coaching voice production/development and presentation skills, Candy’s greatest strength is pinpointing individual challenges and sharing specific, personalized solutions.

Workshop Testimonials
Three things I learned:
Confidence that it is the Word that is being shared not our personal interpretation.
It's all about the meaning!
Be supportive, in every way possible, of those reading from the platform.
It was wonderful learning to
open my eyes and ears to see what’s there on the printed page
to be shared. And you made it fun and exciting to discover the sometimes-hidden meanings in the reading.
Analytical Reading is a beautiful
blend of the letter and spirit — when we really understand the letter, the words, we can bring out the spirit in such a natural, colorful, beautiful way!
This course is excellent, even if you’re not currently a reader! I so appreciated learning about the principles and techniques a reader can use to bring out the color and sparkle of a written text so that the listener can feel it’s healing inspiration. And Candy is excellent — incredibly knowledgeable, engaging and encouraging. Highly recommend!
